Steps to secure your child's summertime safety...in the digital world

More Summertime Down-time Requires Proactive Steps to Keep Kids Safe on the Internet

Whether that long-awaited summer break is spent at the beach or in the cool indoors, chances are your kids will be spending more time connected to the internet. Phones, tablets, laptops, gaming systems and other internet-enabled devices offer great ways to learn and keep kids entertained, but they also open up the possibility of exposure to unwanted images, online predators, cyberbullies and other dangers.

We've got some essential, practical steps to help you get started on summer safety in the digital world. Encouraging responsible internet use and behavior includes keeping the lines of communication open and ongoing. Remind your child to never share personal information or communicate with strangers online.

40% of kids in grades 4-8 reported they connected online with a stranger (Center for Cyber Safety and Education, March 2019).

Use Parental Controls on all
Internet-connected Devices

  • Filter unwanted or dangerous content (violence, pornography, language)
  • Set monitoring tools
  • Control screen time
  • Block unwanted apps, games and others
  • Restrict information your child shares
  • Network controls can be set on your router
  • Controls are also found on devices (smart phones, tablets, etc.)
  • Applications (or apps) also have their own set of controls, including search engines such as Safari or Google
