Public Awareness & Education

Confessions of an Internet Predator: May 19, 2023 - Donna briefed an audience of activists gathered in Washington, DC on the M.O. of an internet predator and tactics used to groom children. (View "Confessions" video here).

May's communications campaigns included a special focus on Mental Health Awareness Month to show the impact social media is having upon the lives of children and adolescents. At the end of the month, the Surgeon General issued an advisory stating social media presents a ‘profound risk of harm’ for kids.

Values Action Team on Capitol Hill

May 22, 2023 - Donna spoke to members of Congress and other NGO members on the Values Action Team about the rising concerns around online exploitation and the failure of the Department of Justice to prosecute the federal obscenity laws.

EIE met with several elected officials to advocate for key policy and child protective measures on the internet:

Eliminating Abusive and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies Act ("EARN IT Act") to combat the spread of child sexual abuse material online and develop best practices used by industry. *Contact NY Senator Chuck Schumer to let him know you'd like him to call for a floor vote on EARN IT!
Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) would provide minors with options to protect their information, disable addictive product features and more.
“COPPA 2.0,” would raise the age of protection under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act from 13 to 16 years of age.
Worked with Congressman Robert Aderholt (AL-04) (pictured here), Chair of the Values Action Team (VAT) during the VAT May Coalition Meeting, to urge the Judiciary Committee to call on DOJ to account for its failure to prosecute obscenity laws.

IMPORTANT UPDATE! We're encouraged that on May 23rd, the White House announced actions to "safeguard children’s privacy, health, and safety from online harms. These actions build upon the U.S. Surgeon-General’s new Advisory on Social Media and Youth Mental Health, which describes the current evidence of the impacts of social media on children and adolescents, and states that we cannot conclude social media is sufficiently safe for children." EIE previously met with administration officials at the start of the term to encourage the president to prioritize the prevention of online sexual exploitation of children.
