A Letter From the Author

I have designed the book, Kids Online, to be used as a public awareness tool, a training manual and a "take action" plan for parents and others involved in the supervision of children. Its one-stop shopping manual on what you need to know to protect children on the Internet- for the Internet savvy and the not-so-savvy novice. It's the type of resource to always keep within arms reach of your computer. I've designed this web site as a resource to complement Kids Online and give you a thumb nail sketch of the information contained in the book itself.

Parents are the first line of defense for protecting their own children on the Internet. Simply by reading this book and accessing this web site, you are increasing your awareness of the issues surrounding child safety online and thereby becoming better equipped to ensure that your child's online experience is safe, educational, and entertaining.

You'll find additional resources in the appendices for your further education and guidance. Because the Internet and surrounding technologies are growing and changing every day, it is important for you to keep as current as possible. I hope you will use these resources to further your awareness. By accessing the information in the resource lists and other appendices that provide pertinent web sites, you will be able to get the most up-to-date information regarding child safety and other issues. I've included links to many sites for your convenience at www.protectkids.com. Again, this web site contains summaries and highlights of the information and resources available in my book. This is the beauty of the Internet - current information at your fingertips, with a simple click of the mouse, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

It is my sincere hope that Kids Online and its accompanying web site, www.protectkids.com will serve as a resource to empower all child advocates--parents, educators, librarians, industry leaders, law enforcement officials, politicians, community caregivers--to join together to make the Internet safe, educational, and entertaining. Our children deserve a protected space of innocence and nothing less!

For the sake of the children,

Donna Rice Hughes
