Announcing EIE's Guide to Safety Settings for Popular Social Media Apps

INTRODUCING ... EIE'S "SAFETY SETTINGS FOR POPULAR SOCIAL MEDIA APPS"

Internet Safety Month continues with the release of our Safety Settings for Popular Social Media Apps designed to help parents navigate safety and privacy features and includes links to each platform’s information as well as tutorials.

This essential guide features direct links to safety settings found on popular apps including Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and more. On this two-page guide, you'll find step-by-step instructions to activate filters, set screen time limits, and restrict inappropriate interactions, all of which are critical steps in helping to ensure your teens' safety on these platforms.

The table is divided into three sections: policies enforced by the social media company, parental account options which a parent can enforce, and account settings, which the owner of the account must enforce.

DID YOU KNOW ...

  • Up to 95% of youth ages 13–17 report using a social media platform, with more than a third saying they use social media “almost constantly.” (Pew Research, 2022)
  • Although age 13 is commonly the required minimum age used by social media platforms in the U.S., nearly 40% of children ages 8–12 use social media. (Federal Trade Commission)

Just In: A study published in the medical journal JAMA this week found that children with highly addictive use of phones, video games or social media were two to three times as likely to have thoughts of suicide or to harm themselves.

Active involvement of parents and caregivers in establishing proper safety settings and monitoring their child's social media use is crucial for fostering a safe online environment. By taking proactive steps, they can help mitigate risks such as cyberbullying, online predators, sexual exploitation and exposure to inappropriate content. Engaging in open conversations about social media usage also empowers children to make informed decisions and develop healthy online habits. This partnership not only enhances a child's "digital literacy" but also strengthens the parent-child relationship, creating a foundation of trust and communication.
