The Alarming Rise in Artificial Intelligence - Are You and Your Child Aware of the Risks?

Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Generated Nude Images: A Disturbing Reality

"Wait. Like, AI? Like, no one thinks that could happen to you."

-- Francesca Mani, AI reportedly used to generate nude images of her

An eye-opening 60 Minutes segment that aired this week highlights the alarming rise of AI-generated nude images and their devastating impact, especially on children. These technologies are being exploited to create explicit, harmful content, making online safety more critical than ever.

FBI Warns Of Generative AI Attacks Against Smartphone Users

The FBI recently issued a public service alert announcing criminals are exploiting generative AI to commit fraud on a larger scale. Examples of criminals using generative AI include the following:

  • AI-Generated Text: Creating voluminous fictitious social media profiles used to trick victims into sending money.
  • AI-Generated Images: Creating pornographic photos of a victim to demand payment in sextortion schemes.
  • AI-Generated Audio: Generating short audio clips containing a loved one's voice to impersonate a close relative in a crisis situation, asking for immediate financial assistance or demanding a ransom.
  • AI-Generated Video: Creating videos for private communications to "prove" the online contact is a "real person."

Legislation to "Take It Down"

On December 3, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan bill cosponsored by Senator Cruz (R-Texas) and Senator Klobuchar (D-MN) stopping AI ‘Revenge Porn’.  The Take It Down Act would criminalize the publication of non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), including AI-generated NCII (commonly referred to as “deepfake revenge pornography”), and require social media and similar websites to have in place procedures to remove such content within 48 hours of notice from a victim.

This bill, now pending in the House, would bring much-needed justice to survivors and has received widespread support from nearly 90 organizations including EIE, victim advocacy groups, law enforcement, and tech industry leaders.
